By the time Deputy Johnson returns to the station, Iâve talked myself out of Wayne, or his family, having any connection to Carolâs murder. However, Iâll be keeping my doubts to myself. Erick stuck his neck out by bringing a man in for questioning based on a feeling I had when I couldnât think of anything else. The last thing Iâm going to do is leave him holding an empty bag.
Iâm posted up in the observation room with an ice-cold can of caffeinated pop and a bag of tortilla chips. Nothing would complete this snack better than some freshly made salsa, but what passes for Mexican food at this northern latitude hardly fits the bill.
Erick opens the door for Mr. Olsen, and an elderly man with thick white hair hobbles in, supporting most of his weight with a four-pronged cane. He eases himself into the chair facing the observation room, and Erick takes a seat with his back to me.
âMr. Olsen, I appreciate you cooperating with our investigation.â
âNonsense. Anything to help our local law enforcement. And call me Niklas.â
âOf course. Iâm sure youâve heard about the passing of your daughter-in-law, Carol. I hope you understand, weâre speaking to everyone who knew the victim, just to rule them out. Youâre not a suspect. I hope you will be forthcoming with your responses.â
Niklas Olsen considers the speech carefully and nods. One hand rests in his lap, the other still grips the knob atop his sturdy cane. âShe was my daughter-in-law by technicality only. You know how many times Wayne tried to untie that knot. Iâm sorry she met with a violent end, but Iâm not sorry sheâs gone.â
Setting down my bag of chips, I lean forward and take several deep breaths. There was something in that phrase, something that triggered a spark in my extrasensory perceptions. Itâs time for me to stop snacking and pay attention.
âI appreciate your honesty, Niklas. Were you aware that Carol had entered the country from Canada several times in the last two weeks?â
He looks directly at Erick as he answers. âI was not.â
Erick makes a note on his pad and continues. âWhen did you decide to retire?â
âI made the announcement Friday night, out at the old compound, as Norma calls it.â
âYes, sir. I understand you had a family gathering Friday evening. What Iâm asking is when did you make the decision to retire? A man in your position canât have taken a move like that lightly. I know how hard you worked to expand your business and remain independent from the big conglomerates. Transitioning things to a new company president would take time to organize. What Iâm asking you is how long has Wayne known about your plans to retire?â
Niklas grips the top of his cane and adjusts his position in his chair. His gaze narrows. âMy boy had nothing to do with this, Sheriff. If you brought me in here in some sort of underhanded attempt to get me to incriminate my son, youâve made a grave mistake.
